Tire Blowouts
Tire blowouts are dangerous when they occur. Not only can they cause a truck driver to lose control of the vehicle, but the flying pieces of tire can harm other cars on the road as well. A tire blowout occurs when a radial tire suddenly loses its tread. Tire blowouts are associated with a loss of tire tread and drastically increase the chances that a vehicle will roll over.
When a rear tire suffers a blowout, controlling the rest of the vehicle becomes difficult, particularly when it occurs on a highway. When control is lost, it is easy for the rear of the vehicle to swing around and become perpendicular to the direction of travel. If this is not reversed immediately, the sideways motion of the vehicle lets the bead of the tire separate from the rim. This allows the rim to dig into the road surface.
When the rim digs into the pavement, it propels the vehicle into a roll. Rollovers can also occur if the vehicle comes into contact with grass, dirt, or some other new surface while moving sideways. Grass or dirt will “trip” the truck and launch it into a rollover.
There are a number of causes of tire blowouts. One of the biggest is poor adhesion of the tire pieces. Another problem is poor design. The design and placement of the belts and overlying tread of a tire can play a huge role in its ability not to become blown out.
